Tongva Memorial Unveiled in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA

On October 16th, 2021, a memorial honoring the Tongva tribe, was unveiled by the City of Rancho Palos Verdes in conjunction with the Gabrieleño/Tongva San Gabriel Band of Mission Indians. The memorial was created by Tongva elder and New Mexico artist Geri Jiminez Gould and features a scene of daily life in the Tongva villages with Catalina Island appearing in the background. Tom Steers spearheaded the process which was initiated six years ago, and was the primary fundraiser and coordinator to solicit input from Tongvan leaders and elders and to receive approval from the Rancho Palos Verdes City Council.

The Long Family Foundation is grateful to play a small part in honoring the first peoples of Los Angeles and are excited that the monument exists as a way to educate the community about the Tongva legacy.
